In the late 1990s, a group of students from Punjab University and other public institutions came together to create what campuses lacked—safe and inclusive spaces where youth, especially boys and girls together, could engage, express, and grow. With few forums, non-academic programmes, and associational work beyond divisive student politics, these young changemakers saw possibility. They envisioned a new kind of space—built on dialogue, inclusion, and shared growth. They imagined a platform where youth could challenge and negotiate with norms, express their identities, and build collective strength.
In 1997, this vision took root as Bargad, and in 1998, Bargad was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. Named after the banyan tree—a traditional village gathering spot—Bargad became a metaphorical sanctuary for Pakistan’s youth.
What began as a student-led initiative has since become one of Pakistan’s leading youth development organizations. Over 28 years, Bargad has implemented 100+ projects, facilitated over 1,600 youth-led actions, and reached 500,000+ youth and women across. It has more than 3500 volunteers across 104 districts. With partnerships in 86 universities and a strong digital presence, Bargad has provided technical assistance for formulating and implementing pioneering youth polices, nurtured leadership, and amplified marginalized youth voices.
From the simple demand for safe and inclusive spaces to becoming a national voice for youth empowerment, Bargad remains rooted in its founding purpose: to create safe and inclusive spaces where youth grow, lead, and thrive.
